DESCRIPTION:Celebrating KS Nisar Ahmed\n\nThrough poetry and song\n\nwith\n
\nRoopa Pai : Author of “Every Day is a Celebration” – a translation
of selected works of KS Nisar Ahmed\n\nand\n\nMangala Karthik : A Classic
al Carnatic Vocalist and Educator.\n\nSumana Chandrashekar : Ghatam\n\nJyo
tsna Hebbar : Veena\n\nAbout the Event\n\nOn the occasion of Kannada Rajyo
tsava we celebrate one of Karnataka’s most beloved poets\n\nPadma Shri K
S Nisar Ahmed\n\nEvery Day a Celebration\, a new book of translation of Ni
sar Ahmed’s poetry\, gathers some of his finest poems\, spanning more th
an five decades\, and introduces his voice to a wider audience through Roo
pa Pai’s sensitive translation. English readers can now experience the b
rilliance of a Kannada poet whose voice continues to resonate with urgency
and humanity.\n\nThis special event brings his poetry to life as bestsell
ing author Roopa Pai reads from her English translations of his finest wor
k\, while celebrated classical vocalist Mangala Karthik and her musical en
semble perform these iconic verses live as beautiful melodies.\n\nAbout Ro
 opa Pai\n\nRoopa Pai is an acclaimed Bengaluru-based author\, journalist\,
and cultural chronicler widely celebrated for making complex philosophies
\, histories\, and literatures deeply accessible to readers.\n\nWhile she
is a prolific creator of children’s fantasy and non-fiction\, her role a
 s a translator shines brightly in Every Day a Celebration—her landmark d
ebut translation project. Driven by a lifelong passion for her city and it
s regional heritage\, she delicately translates five decades of stirring K
annada verse by the iconic poet K. S. Nisar Ahmed\, bridging cultural gaps
to allow English-speaking audiences to experience the soul and lyrical be
auty of Karnataka’s literary giant. This book beautifully reflects her b
roader life’s work as a bridge-builder of heritage: whether she is simpl
ifying ancient Indian scriptures like The Gita\, unearthing local history
through her tour company BangaloreWalks\, or translating evocative local p
oetry\, her writing constantly seeks to make profound human experiences fe
 el intimate\, relevant\, and alive.\n\nAbout Mangala Karthik\n\nMangala Ka
rthik is a Carnatic vocalist\, teacher\, and co-founder of the Anandi Cent
re for Music in Bangalore. A disciple of the legendary violinist Padmabhus
han Lalgudi Jayaraman and renowned teacher Sangeetha Kalacharya Neela Ramg
opal\, she brings exceptional pedigree and depth to her music. She is pass
ionate about making classical music accessible to all and has served as a
radio jockey\, music interviewer\, and writer alongside her performance ca
reer. Her teaching philosophy emphasises removing jargon and enabling stud
ents to experience the joy of Carnatic music at every level.\n\nAbout Suma
na Chandrashekar\n\nSumana Chandrashekar is a Bengaluru-based Carnatic per
cussionist\, researcher\, and author who stands out as one of the few prom
inent female players of the ghatam (clay pot). After starting her musical
journey as a vocalist\, she shifted to percussion in her late twenties fol
lowing a recurring\, vivid dream about the clay pot. She went on to train
under trailblazing gurus Vidushi Sukanya Ramgopal and T.H. “Vikku” Vin
ayakram\, even learning the traditional craft of pot-making in Manamadurai
to deepen her connection to the instrument. Known for her ambidextrous pl
aying style and signature performance turban\, she detailed her artistic j
ourney and confronted systemic patriarchy in classical music within her ac
claimed memoir\, Song of the Clay Pot.\n\nAbout Jyotsna Hebbar\n\nJyothsna
Hebbar is an accomplished Indian Carnatic classical musician from Bengalu
ru\, known for her rare mastery as both a Vainika (Veena player) and a Mri
dangam percussionist. She received rigorous training under her mother\, Vi
dushi Smt. Jyothi Chetan (for Veena)\, and Vidwan Shri H. S. Sudhindra (fo
r Mridangam). A recipient of the prestigious CCRT cultural scholarship\, s
he has won top prizes at the Madras Music Academy and the Bangalore Gayana
  Samaja.

an Indo-Pakistani writer known for his irreverent and controversial writin

DESCRIPTION:Bhima\nLanguage: English\nDevised and performed by: Vivek Vijay
akumaran and Sachin Gurjale\nDirected by: Anitha Santhanam\nDrawing inspir
ation from Ashok Malhotra’s Child Man\, MT Vasudevan Nair’s Randamoozh
am\, and Jeanette Winterson’s Weight\, this play explores the paradoxes
and ironies in the life of the second Pandava\, Bhima.\nWho is Bhima? What
is his hunger? Who feeds it? What are the choices available to a hero? Wh
at is the fate of a strong man in contemporary times? These are some of th
e questions around which the key narrative of the play evolves. What is hi
s relevance to contemporary life? Would his version of masculinity be acce
ptable in today’s world?\nIf Bhima were to live today\, who would he be
 — a loyal middle-management warrior who is the engine of the company but
never its CEO? A family man who defines himself only in terms of roles
 — the breadwinner\, the husband\, the son — who will do anything for h
is family? Or does he exist as an individual beyond these roles? Does soci
ety look after its Bhimas\, or is it only Arjuna we want?\nContrasting the
Koodiyattam form with contemporary dialogue and commentary\, using music
and poetry as interventions\, Bhima re-examines a version of masculinity
and its interaction with modernity.\nBhima won the Best Innovative Sound
Design award for Sachin Gurjale at the 2017 Mahindra Excellence in Theatre

s deathbed. His gift of divine sight is long gone. But what he bore witnes
s to during the war remains with him. He begins to narrate the tale of the
war again — only this time\, the tale is replete with events and detail
s that he chose not to reveal during the war.\nThe play explores the follo
wing questions: What do we see but do not say? What stops us from speaking
? What do we carry to our deathbeds? What does it mean to be a witness?\nM
irage will be presented as a dramatic reading and incorporate elements of
clowning.\nThe play reading will be followed by a discussion between the p
laywright\, actors and  the audience.\nFor enquiries please contact: 50ye

DESCRIPTION:Red Nose Clowning\nA Workshop by Ashwath Bhatt\nThe clown often
lands in a place where urgency prevails and dilemma takes over\, pressure
turns into perseverance and a never-say-die attitude emerges. The clown l
ives in the moment\, in a theatre of the 'Here and Now'.\nThrough the clow
n\, participants will explore the world from a more positive viewpoint\, f
ree from moral and logical constraints. We all have a clown hiding within
us. During the workshop\, an inner clown character will be born through an
organic process based on both eastern and western techniques. Starting wi
th an outer neutral persona\, we will work our way towards the ridiculous
and then the grotesque.\nAt the end of the workshop\, participants will ga
in clarity about the rules and tools of clowning\, so that they can embark
on clown exploration with courage. The workshop will go beyond gags and l
ook for the clown who connects to the heart of the spectators.\nFor enquir

DESCRIPTION:The Death of GalileoWednesday\, 25th November\, 7.30 p.m. - 8.5
0 p.m.Language: HindiAbout the PerformanceThis play is an adaptation of Be
rtolt Brecht’s Life of Galileo. Using a non-linear theatrical structure\
, it connects Galileo’s struggle to contemporary realities. The play unfo
lds at night inside a museum\, where a group arrives to demolish its colle
ction of cultural and collective living memories and objects. Among the ar
tefacts\, they discover a telescope\, which becomes the point of departure
for the story of Galileo — his discoveries\, struggles\, confinement an
d unceasing search for truth. As the night progresses\, Galileo’s time a
nd the present time begin to unfold simultaneously\, revealing parallels b
etween social realities in two different historical moments. The members of
the demolition group are themselves caught between disillusionment\, viol
ence and self-deception. Their encounter with the museum and with Galileo
stirs their conscience\, and while one group remains adamant\, the other b
egins to question its reasons for wanting to destroy the museum. An intern
al conflict begins\, between the path they’ve chosen\, to raze the museu
m for their pride\, and the path their conscience wants to guide them towa
rds. Experimental music anchors the play in the present moment\, voicing t
he characters' contradictions and a call to act for co-existence.The perfo
rmance draws on Brecht’s distancing effect alongside character expressio
n\, an actor-development process emerging from Rajkumar Rajak’s research

heatre TonkAbout the ArtistsRajkumar RajakRajkumar Rajak is a theatre arti
st whose practice connects theatre with education and with communities. Hi
s artistic journey has been shaped by a persistent curiosity about the rel
ationship between the actor’s body\, mind and emotions\, their socialisa
tion\, and how these shape their character and performance. Much of his th
eatre practice has grown through working with non-actors from rural and sm
all-town communities who\, through sustained engagement in his productions
\, have evolved as actors and\, in some cases\, developed their own conten
t and language of theatre.Rajkumar has been finding his own pathways for a
ctor development through experimental rehearsal processes. His practice-ba
sed research\, Actorgy\, explores the actor as a social-historical body an
d the development of character through relationships\, interaction and per
formance. His directorial work includes Suraj Ka Satwaan Ghoda\, Hawalaat\
, Bhukhwasi Bhand and The Death of Galileo. He worked with the Azim Premji
Foundation as a teacher educator for twelve years\, and designed its Arts
Education Internship. He has also received a new performance grant from th
e India Foundation for the Arts (2009-10)\, and the Ministry of Culture’
s Junior Research Fellowship 2014.Ramratan GugaliaRamratan Gugulia has bee
n engaged in theatre for the past 10 years as an actor\, lyricist and dire
ctor. He began his journey with Eklavya\, directed by Rajkumar Rajak\, whe
re he played Dronacharya and also wrote the lyrics. He has since performed
a range of roles in Bade Bhai Sahab\, Jyoti\, Nirantar Eklavya\, Tonk Jun
ction\, Visarjan and Dakghar\, and he has taken part in leading theatre fe
stivals such as Jairangam and Bharat Rang Mahotsav. As a director\, he has
adapted and staged Rabindranath Tagore’s story Tota. Every summer vacat
ion\, he volunteers as a facilitator in children’s theatre workshops run
by Community Theatre Tonk. He believes that theatre is a space where idea
s can be reflected on and practised until they become part of everyday lif
e\, rather than remaining as talk of what “should be done”. A governme
nt school teacher by profession\, he teaches language to children. In The
Death of Galileo\, he plays the central role of Galileo Galilei.Karan Kuma
rKaran Kumar\, from Prayagraj\, Uttar Pradesh\, is an art teacher\, traine
r and theatre artist who has been learning and growing as an actor for fiv
 e years. In The Death of Galileo\, he plays Dhyan\, a 22-year-old youth. T
he play has given him a sharper historical lens. It shows how human societ
y has repeatedly silenced truth and how religious authority has always pla
ced itself above everything else.Chitranjan NamaChitranjan Nama trained in
painting and has worked actively in theatre for ten years. He has been a
founding member\, actor and director of Community Theatre Tonk since it be
gan in 2016\, and he now serves as its President. Throughout this journey\
, his experiments with live music in theatre have helped give the art form
a living presence in Tonk. In The Death of Galileo\, he plays Balbir\, a
young man who dreams of destroying a museum and\, with it\, the memory of
human civilisation. He also plays a Roman Monk who challenges Galileo’s
discoveries to protect the religious order and its boundaries. For him\, t
he play raises a key question. When power or ideology stands against knowl
edge\, science and the freedom to question\, what should an artist and a h
uman being do?Photo Credits: Arvind JodhaAbout the FestivalPLAYINTERPLAY i

DESCRIPTION:Goonj ka GharThursday\, 26th November\, 7.30 p.m. - 8.20 p.m.La
nguage: Hindi (with subtitles in English)About the PerformanceGoonj ka Gha
r is a physical theatre performance that combines movement\, minimal set d
esign\, and fragmented storytelling to explore themes of identity\, power\
, and marginalisation. Initially inspired by three seminal short stories\,
Tirichh by Uday Prakash\, Toba Tek Singh by Saadat Hasan Manto\, and Uljh
an by Vijaydan Detha\, which are woven into a single theatrical narrative
that interrogates unresolved questions of identity\, belonging and justice
in today’s world.Set against the backdrop of a society grappling with c
itizenship\, identity and social justice\, the performance raises urgent q
uestions: What makes a person a citizen? What do we call home when borders
both physical and psychological remain in flux? Who is considered sane\,
worthy\, beautiful\, or legitimate? Why does society continue to value wom
en who appear silent and submissive? Each segment reflects marginalisation
through a distinct lens — surreal satire on madness and displacement\,
dark allegory on invisibility and class\, and an introspective exploration
of gender\, self-worth and systemic injustice.CastACT IMaya: NaginaHusban

DESCRIPTION:Kadambari: Tracing Fragments of a Shattered MuseFriday\, 27th N
 ovember\, 7.30 p.m - 9.00 p.m.Language: Hindi\, BengaliAbout the Performan
ceKadambari is a lyrical theatrical journey into the silenced life of Kada
 mbari Devi\, Rabindranath Tagore’s critic\, muse\, companion\, and siste
r-in-law\, married into the Tagore household at nine and gone by 25\, when
the poet himself was only 23. Rather than reducing her to a footnote in h
is biography\, the play seeks to restore her voice\, weaving memory\, fict
ion and imagination. It traces fragments of her existence beyond whispers
of scandal and tragedy\, asking how history chooses to remember or erase t
he women who stand behind celebrated men.Set during her final hours\, the
play imagines Death arriving to claim her. In this liminal space\, Kadamba
ri confronts Rabi with unresolved questions of love\, freedom\, and erasur
 e. Their dialogue moves between the personal and the poetic\, intertwining
childhood memories\, moments of intimacy\, and echoes of Tagore’s ficti
onal heroines who carry her shadow.Kadambari won the award for Best Actor
in a Supporting Role (Female) for Ipshita Chakraborty Singh at the 2026 Ma
hindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META).CastKadambari: Ipshita Chakrabo

an actor. He is a lover. He is a delight. His gift is that he does not me
rely play a role — he becomes the role. Today\, he is here to audition f
or perhaps his most difficult role yet: “A Feminist Man”.Over the cour
se of a 60-minute audition\, guided by a disembodied voice — part direct
or\, part conscience\, part societal echo — Vinod navigates the full ran
ge of his performative self. As memory\, desire\, myth\, cinema and condit
ioning collide\, the audition room becomes a space where masculinity is co
ntinuously performed\, interrogated and disrupted. Is a feminist man simply
another role to master? Or is it something deeper\, messier and impossibl
 e to fully perform? Blending humour\, discomfort\, role-play and self-exam
ination\, Full Frontal asks: what does it mean to be a man in India today?
