About

Welcome to the second set of screenings of 'From Monochrome to Modernity'!This is a collaboration of The Parallel Cinema Club, Daijoubu eSports and Japan Habba to bring to everyone the rich cinematic culture of Japan. Through curated films from the likes of Kurosawa and Teshigahara, we span through 120 years of Japanese cinema's vibrant richness. The second set of films will look at the The Japanese New Wave.About the period: The Japanese New Wave (Nuberu Bagu) emerged in the late 1950s–1960s as younger directors reacted against the studio system’s commercial formulas and the older Golden Age masters. Led by figures such as Nagisa Oshima, Shohei Imamura, Yoshishige Yoshida, Masahiro Shinoda, and Hiroshi Teshigahara, it engaged with politics, youth alienation, sexuality, and social taboos. Formally it broke with classical continuity, favoring handheld cameras, jump cuts, improvisation, documentary-like textures, and self-reflexive experimentation. Its energy was tied to postwar protest culture and independent production, often challenging both Japanese society and cinematic convention.Films to be screened:Face of Another by Hiroshi Teshigahara Death by Hanging by Nagisa ŌshimaDemons by Toshio MatsumotoThis is a free screening, with breaks after each film.
