[LIMITED EARLY BIRD SLOTS | Tickets in bio] Can spacetime be broken down into fundamental building blocks?
More than a century ago, Einstein showed that space and time are not independent. Together they form spacetime, the four-dimensional structure in which physical events occur.
General relativity went further. It showed that spacetime is not a fixed background. Matter and energy affect its geometry, while that geometry determines how matter moves.
This description works remarkably well at the scale of the universe. But general relativity also points towards situations where it can no longer provide a complete description of nature. At the singularities associated with the Big Bang and the interiors of black holes, the classical description of spacetime breaks down. A theory of quantum gravity would need to describe what spacetime itself becomes at these scales.

In this lecture, Sumati Surya, senior professor of theoretical physics at the Raman Research Institute, will introduce the ideas behind causal set theory and examine what they imply about the nature of space, time and gravity.
