About
[TICKET LINK IN BIO] Do you know how many people in India suffer from mental health conditions? The numbers are concerning as approximately 10 crore people in India face such challenges.
Despite this, only 15% of them are able to receive treatment with a tremendous scarcity of specialist doctors in rural and tribal areas. While awareness and the use of diagnostic labels to express mental health concerns among more privileged is increasing; stigma persists, keeping many individuals away from seeking help.
To be able to collectively think through the possible solutions, we need to ask some questions: Is mental health only about receiving medication? How do social, environmental factors shape our mental health? Is this a problem of those coming from urban privileged backgrounds alone? Can mental health care be brought to the communities? More importantly, in such a grim situation of mental health, are there glimpses of hope?
While all these questions need deliberation, the answer to the last question is... yes!
From Dr. Mukta's research on community-based mental health, there is a lot that we can learn (and unlearn!) about mental health. We’ll discuss the need to create supportive structures, safe spaces and communities where mental health can be protected and nurtured, spaces where each of us can play a role. There will be case stories like, dukhu-sukhu baithaki from Jharkhand, Friendship bench from Zimbabwe and dance movement therapy from West Bengal.
Find out how investment in mental health care can happen for all.
