✨ ThursTalk #02 — Simone de Beauvoir: A Living, Inspiring Legacy ✨

What would it be like to hear Simone de Beauvoir’s story from someone who knew her personally — and explore her lasting influence in India?

This year marks 40 years since Simone de Beauvoir’s death. Join us at the Simone de Beauvoir Library at Alliance Française de Bangalore for a special event bringing her life and ideas to life.

Our special guest, Claudine Monteil, will join us live on Zoom from France to share memories of her 16-year friendship with Simone de Beauvoir, author of The Second Sex. A writer, historian and former diplomat, Claudine knew Beauvoir personally and visited her every Sunday. At 21, she became the youngest signatory of the Manifesto of the 343, a defining moment in the fight for abortion rights in France. She has written numerous books about Beauvoir, translated into several languages.

In conversation with Smriti Chawla of Swissnex in India, Claudine will share personal memories and reflect on her own activism and Beauvoir’s, as well as the history of the women’s rights movement in France. Smriti, whose work focuses on gender equality and social empowerment, will bring an Indian perspective: how The Second Sex was received, how it is read and studied in India, and why it continues to matter.

Personal memories. A landmark feminist text. Perspectives from France and India.

And then an open conversation with you: bring your questions, reflections or personal stories. Everyone is welcome, whether Beauvoir is already part of your world or you’re meeting her ideas for the first time.
