Pint of View Lecture Over Drinks: Murder in the Expanding Universe—Investigating Dark Energy & the Possible Death of the Cosmological Constant

**About the event**

Welcome to Pint of View, Bangalore’s first-ever community where classroom-styled lectures meet drinks in relaxed spaces.

The Universe is expanding, and one quantity, the cosmological constant, has been known to explain why the expansion is speeding up.... until now.

New data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) hints that the cosmological constant may not be constant after all.

Inspired by the film noir genre, this talk will address what we know about the Universe’s expansion so far, and whether the cosmological constant is dead for good. We will visit the crime scene, flash back through a century of clues, and question the witnesses: galaxies and quasars that each saw the universe at a different moment in time.

We will line up the suspects who may or may not have killed the cosmological constant, and cross-examine them with evidence that the Universe naturally provides us.

Here’s a case that is far from being open-and-shut.

**About the Speaker**

Dr. Basundhara Ghosh is a faculty of Physics at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru, and specialises in Theoretical Cosmology.

Prior to this, she was a DST-INSPIRE Faculty and a CV Raman Postdoctoral Fellow at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and a DAAD Research Fellow at Heidelberg University, Germany.

She obtained her PhD from the University of Geneva, Switzerland and her MSc from the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar. Her research interests encompass the study of the Universe at late times, also known as the dark energy- dominated epoch.
