Je Tsongkhapa Losang Drakpa (1357–1419), born in Amdo in what is now Qinghai, wrote it as a more accessible version of his Great Treatise (Lam Rim Chen Mo), which he completed around 1402.The lamrim traditionLamrim means “stages of the path.” The genre begins with the Indian master Atisha’s Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment(Bodhipathapradipa, 1042), which presents the whole Buddhist path as a graded progression. Tsongkhapa drew on that model and on the wider Kadampa teachings to organise the Buddha’s teachings into a single, sequenced practice, so that each stage prepares the mind for the next.
